Home-based businesses are a very appealing way to bring in income for many reasons. Stay-at-home moms, elderly, disabled, and out-of-work individuals all have interest in running a business from home. However, whether you work under an already established company or start your own from scratch, there are major difficulties that can and do cause many businesses to fail without proper planning.

1. Your Frame of Mind - Having a business is very appealing for many reasons. However, without being in the right frame of mind to work, you are setting up yourself to fail. Many people start with dreams of money but little else. It is very important to realize before you do anything that it is a BUSINESS. You must work as though you are running the largest Fortune 500 company in the country. Would a CEO allow himself to be distracted by TV, video games, or other activities during dedicated work periods? Of course not. Would he downplay the value of his time and money and allow himself to be shortchanged? Never! You must approach your business with a very serious mindset, and do everything in your power to learn to run your business as though your life depended on it. “…when I started out trying to market, it just wasn’t working for me. I tried for a year…BUT I was not in the right frame of mind at that time to run that kind of business the right way anyway, so in truth that was holding me back!” says Melissa, a work-at-home mom who has tried several different ventures without success, but by changing her mindset has been able to start a new business that has become very successful for her.

2. Time - The flexibility that comes with working from home is a big draw for most people who begin home-based businesses. However, balancing family and work time is very difficult, and it is very easy to become sidetracked by other things. At first, you may feel as though you should work 24 hours a day - but you MUST resist the urge to do this! Not only will you burn out very quickly, but you may grow to resent your business, and other areas of your life will suffer. But on the other hand, it is easy to get distracted by children, housework, or other personal interests when you should be working. It is very important to create a schedule for yourself - plan when you will work and when you will spend time doing other things. Make sure you arrange childcare if necessary, or alert friends and family to specific times you will be unavailable - and stick to it. They may not consider what you are doing as “work”, depending on what area you are working in, but you must be firm in not allowing them to invade work time with unnecessary requests. It may take some time, but you will with dedication find a balance between working at home and living at home, which will be one less issue to worry about in running a successful business. I myself have had difficulties in the past maintaining a proper work schedule, which has caused several attempted businesses to fail. From my experience, this is one of the top reasons business fail - poor time management.

3. Money - Problems with money stem from two sources - less coming in, and more going out. Many people prematurely leave jobs to start businesses, which can be a deal breaker if things don’t go as well as you planned early on. If you work, it may be best to continue to do so and run your business part-time until you have a steady flow of income. You will have to consider very careful if and when you should leave your traditional job to ensure you won’t suffer if you don’t earn what you expect. On the other hand, if you already are at home, you may not suffer in the same way because you won’t be necessarily losing income. The other side is that many people often underestimate the costs associated with starting a business. They run the gamut from very low to very high - for example, a craft business may not cost you much as you may already have many materials to create your product, but starting business through a major company may cost you a great deal if you have minimums you must meet monthly or if you are required to keep a large quantity of product on hand. It is important to plan a budget so you are aware of how much money will be required to start and maintain your business, so you will know how much from your household income you will need to use, and so you can make educated forecasts on how much income you need to earn through your business to maintain and grow it. You wouldn’t want to go bankrupt attempting to start your business, and you surely wouldn’t want it to fail because of poor planning.

It is easy to get sidetracked by big dreams of success and comfort, but it is EXTREMELY important to plan to avoid common causes of failure in home-based businesses. Having a proper mindset about the realities of running a business, proper time management, and financial planning can help you to avoid difficulties in the start-up phase and beyond of your chosen venture. And remember, keep at it and you will succeed!
