Working from home is on the mind of millions of workers all over the world. Commuting from home to office and back takes hours for most and no time for the family is often the result. Research showed that people commute the equivalent time as their yearly vacation time and this is a huge strain on the economies of the world. I stayed in Nairobi, Kenya for a while and it took me more than a hour to commute 10 kilometers to my office.

Although we still need the normal brick and mortar type of businesses a huge amount of work gets done in the background and this is the type of work that can also be done from home. Bigger companies try and create positions that allow this to happen. With technology today, you can be connected to a companies LAN from anywhere in the world making use of what they call Virtual Private Networks.

The biggest obstacle however is that people does not have the responsibility to stick to office hours that gets described by these companies. We still have the normal household duties that need to be taken care of. Is it possible then to actually work from home and be successful?

Answer the following six questions and see if you can qualify for working from home:

1) How much time can you put into your home base business, keeping in mind that the rest of your household still need attention
2) Are you allowed by the authorities to operate a business from home? This will determine the type of business you will run
3) What skills do you have?
4) Can you put your hobby or skills into a business?
5) Can you stay focused?
6) Can you afford to be without a monthly income for a while? This is a tough one and this answer will also determine what type of business you want to start.
