Well over half the population now works from home, these people either own their own businesses on or offline or they work from home by using a corporate company that they probably worked for in an office at one point or another, but decided they wanted to work at home for whatever the reason. Having a home based business and working from home for an employer has their own different benefits. A majority of people that have a home business are their own “boss” so they can run the business how they want, when they want, and where they want. Where they want? Ya this is the nice thing about being my own boss, I can work at home on my laptop or if I want I can take said laptop, take it with me, and work from the beach, the park, the coffee shop, etc. However, people that work at home for an employer have less freedom because they are working for someone else that usually expects them to work X amount of hours, and these people usually have deadlines, and need to be at home to access certain files from the employers server.
Now, I have never worked at home for someone else. It’s just something I chose not to do because of the lack of freedom and the lack of advancement for money. For instance, my cousin is a big whig consultant at a firm in Maryland. After she had her kids she took some time off, but since she was such an important asset to the company they wanted to do whatever they could to keep her. So she decided to start working from home, it’s great for her, she gets to be with her kids, be there when they get home from school, and although she did have to take a small pay cut, she really enjoys working from home. For me on the other hand, I work at home for myself, I don’t have pay cuts, I can make as much as I want, I can advance, I can work when I want, where I want, how I want and I don’t have a boss “telling” me what to do and what not to do.
Now depending on what type of work at home business you want, either working for yourself, or for someone else, there are different routes you can take. As a business owner, you can sell just about anything from wares to services, you can market the products, the website (which by the way you should have), and you can advertise on places like email sigs, ads, CraigsList, Ebay, Forums, etc. So yea, it is work, but it does pay off! Now if you want to work at home for someone else, you can take several different routes. You can either work from home, at your current place of employment (which they sometimes allow), you can work for someone else online under an MLM, Affiliate, Network marketing business, or you can go from start to finish with a site like Nextel, AT&T, T-Mobile, and work from home.
In all these instances there are positives and negatives, but the one you pick is up to you! You have a lot of options to choose from nowadays, unlike 10 years or so ago when this was pretty unheard of, now it’s an every day thing. Personally, I love it, I wouldn’t change it if I could! I like having my own business but, I also dabble in affiliate marketing and a few other things, so you can stick with one thing, do 5 things, major in one, minor in 2, whatever you choose to do. Just make sure you spend your time wisely, especially with your main source of income because you don’t want to lose out on that!
